This gent up here has made a great track called Nitemoves. He doesn't have an album out yet, but Hot Chip has just put out a mix cd with this track as the number one. That mix is excellent in general, an entry in K7's DJ Kicks series. I'm not sure how long the track will be up on his myspace, but you can click on the caption to check.
(Common's new album cover)I wasn't sure about the etiquette of reviewing an album before it was officially dropped, I've (somehow) had this one for a few weeks and I've been frothing at the mouth waiting to tell people about it. The track that's getting hyped is "The People," but my favorites by far are "Drivin' me wild" featuring Lily Allen, and "Misunderstood" with a vocal sample from the incomparable Nina Simone (who somehow has a myspace page?). I was a little annoyed with how much commercial work I saw Common engaging in, but if such forays into advertising subsequently produce albums like this, I'm all for it.
Ever since I saw the Spike Jonze directed video for Fatlip's "What's Up Fatlip," I've been a fan of Fatlip's solo career. That is why I am ever so happy that he collaborated with The Chemical Brothers on the track "The Salmon Dance" on the Chem's new album. People seem to be more excited about the track "Do It Again" which has a music video, but I find it to repetitive, even with the visuals. You can find them both on the chem's myspace page (again, at least for NOW). 'The Salmon Dance" features some wonderful synth sounds, Fatlip's irreverent rhyming style, and a highly reserved and intelligent salmon named Sammy. The second line of the track always gets me: "Today we're going to teach you some fun facts about salmon... and a brand new dance."
Simian Mobile Disco has put out an album called "Attack Decay Sustain Release." There are a number of good tracks on this album, "I Believe," and "Hustler" are both on their myspace page, but "Love," another great one, isn't. And if you haven't heard the (slightly older) track "We Are Your Friends" which is along with Justice, find it and get it, simply scrumtrelescent.
Charlotte Gainsbourg (just in case) is the daughter of Serge Gainsbourg. I really cannot write an adequately brief description of who this monster of French music is, so go look at his wikipedia article. Even though it's a bit difficult for me to listen to CG's music without seeing her character from La Science des Reves, her recent album: 5:55 has some really nice tracks on it. I particularly like "Everything I Cannot See" and "AF607105," neither of which you can hear on her myspace page.
Labels: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Chemical Brothers, Common, Grovesnor, SMD
